Gabriel scrapbook, 1836-1960.

The scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, photographs, copies of some of Charles Gabriel's compositions, family correspondence and ephemera. The bulk of the materials in the scrapbook relate to Charles H. Gabriel but items pertaining to other family members, particularly Charles's siblings and their spouses, are also included. The collection includes two letters written in 1960 by Harry Hedges, nephew of Charles Gabriel, to William J. Petersen, superintendent of the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Charles Gabriel was born in Cedar County, Iowa, lived in Chicago from 1892 to 1925, and spent his last years in California. He wrote thousands of gospel songs as well as several books dealing with church music and composition. He was the composer of many of the songs made popular by revivalist Billy Sunday. At one point he was the editor of a monthly journal called the Gospel Choir published by the Rodeheaver Company. Charles was one of 8 children born to Isaac Newton and Cleopatra Cotton Gabrie...
