Charles Gabriel was born in Cedar County, Iowa, lived in Chicago from 1892 to 1925, and spent his last years in California. He wrote thousands of gospel songs as well as several books dealing with church music and composition. He was the composer of many of the songs made popular by revivalist Billy Sunday.
